Tools of the Craft

Witchcraft can require the use of many 'tools' and many different words to describe things. All the 'tools' are only additions to the craft to help focus your purpose, and aside from that have no significance. However, the ritual care of them is important, as it helps your subconcious mind to focus better.

Tools of the Trade

Amulet - Generally a small item made from natural materials (wood, stone, shell, or gem), charged for a purpose or intent of protection. Amulets are often ornate and can either be carried in a pouch (felt is recommended) or worn as jewelry.
Asperser - A device used to sprinkle water for purification at the beginning of a spell or ritual. It is usually made from silver or brass.
Athame - A personal ritual blade/knife, traditionally black-handled. It is never used for actual cutting, although some traditions use it to cut the handfasting cake. The Athame is considered to be a male/fire symbol. Some witches like to construct their own athame rather then buy one.
Bell - A bell or gong is often used in early stages of witchcraft to summon the power of the Elements, usually by coveners or self-initiates.
Bolline - A white-handled knife (or special penknife or such) used to cut, carve, or inscribe things (candles, talismans, etc.).
Book of Shadows - A magickal journal, where spells, incantations, invokations, dreams, herbal recipes, ritual notes, and divination results can be recorded and kept. It is usually carefully written in a nice hardcover book, although many variations can occur, including versions on computer disc, in old note-pads and the like.
Candles - Frequently used in spells, with their particular colors, fragrances, and inscriptions serving a symbolic purpose.
Chalice - A goblet or cup used to hold the wine shared around the circle of those participating in a ritual. It is considered symbolic of the female/water influence.
Charcoal - In ritual, charcoal is often used for inscribing and ceremonial incense is often burned on a charcoal saucer.
Cord - A cord or a heavy string used for binding and releasing magick. The color/thickness depends on the spell being cast.
Cloth - Felt and velvet cloths are often used in magick to contain charms and herbs that have been charged with power. Felt is preferred, being closer to the natural world.
Essential Oils - Oils are used to help heal and manifest specific states of mind, as well as add scent during a ritual with the help of an oil-diffuser. Oils can also be used in the construction of charms.
Feathers - Bird feathers are commonly used in magick ritual to represent freedom as well as the element of air.
Herbs - Flowers and herbs are used in witchcraft for their powers of healing and other properties. Different herbs correspond with different requirements. Some must be burnt during ritual, others must be added to the making of a charm.
Incense - Comes in sticks, cones, and powder, with aromas varying from floral to herbal mixtures. The incense chosen and burned during a ritual depends on the purpose of the ritual. A 'common' purpose incense is Frankincense which is considered a 'magickal' incense.
Pentacle - A disc of metal, wood, or ceramic (all natural items) with a pentagram and various other symbols inscribed on it. It symbolizes the element of earth and is used during rituals of protection to represent a shield.
Ritual Scroll - A set of instructions to help a caster work through a complex spell or ritual. Usually these are carefully written onto high quality parchment.
Robes - Often worn by the spell caster to enhance the effectiveness of a spell. Usually representing caftans or choir robes, ritual robes are best made from natural materials, such as cotton, wool, and rayon, that allow the skin to breathe. In witchcraft, the robes tend to be less ornate, while in ritual/high magick these robes can become works of art.
Talisman - A talisman is a drawn symbol or a constructed item that is charged with specific energies. The talisman can either be worn as jewelry or carried on one's person, allowing its energy to exert a continual and subtle influence on the holder.
Thurible - A thurible is a metal dish or burner used to hold charcoal and incense throughout craft ceremonies. It is considered to represent the element of air.
Wand - The wand in witchcraft is a stick around 18 inches (45 cm) long, carved from one of the traditionally considered 'sacred' woods (although finding such woods in some countries can be very hard), and used to channel power. The wand is usually decorated and carved in accordance with the caster's beliefs.

Care of Craft Tools

Each tool should be cleaned (submerse it in running water or bury it in the Earth from the full moon to the new moon) where appropriate.

The tool should then be consecrated with the full moon, which involves blessing it with Earth (salt), Air (incense), Fire (flame), and Water (or wine), as well as a Spell.

Tools should be safely stored when not in use, wrapped in cloth made from natural fiber, and placed in a pouch.

Keep all tools clean and polished. Once a year (choose a date that has special significance for you), ritually cleanse and reconsecrate each tool.

Do not allow others to handle your tools without your consent.
