The Elements of a Basic Wiccan Altar Kit

• A Book of Shadows or journal in which to keep your recipes, spells, dreams, and so forth.
• Sea salt to use in cleansing tools, representing the earth element, and purifying crystals.
• A crystal wand for cleansing, healing, ritual/spell use, and projecting/receiving energies.
• Sage to banish unwanted energies and spirits, cleanse new house, create sacred space, and heal.
• A chalice for holding the element of water or a ritual drink, using to cast a spell, or representing the Goddess.
• Rosemary for healing, good dreams, purification, and protection.
• Dragon's Blood resin incense for adding power and speed to a spell, enhancing the powers and protection.
• Powdered moon incense for use in full moon, prosperity, fertility, or love rituals.
• Powdered air incense to complete the circle opening, call the corners, or represent the element of air.
• Runes to use for divination (asking questions, receiving answers and guidance) in spell work, readings, and casting.
• Love oil to help in love rituals and devotionals and to anoint your tools for loving and light energy.
• Prosperity oil to help in prosperity rituals and to anoint your candles and tools.
• A pentacle as a sign of the body and spirit, of earth, protection, and the divine nature.
• A cauldron to represent the goddess, use in scrying, and for burning bale fires or powdered incense.
• Charcoal tablets for use with powdered or resin incense.
• Candles in the colors of white, red, blue, green, orange, yellow, pink, purple, and black to represent the elements of earth, air, fire, and water, as well as to use in correspondence color-wise to the ritual work you are doing.
• Candleholders to hold your candles.
• A candle snuffer to extinguish your candles. Some believe blowing out candles is an insult to the element.
• A poster or card containing the Wiccan Rede to remind you that Wicca is a journey of love, not vengeance, and is not to be used for harm.
• An altar bell for use in invoking the Goddess or for altar decor.
• A wooden box for holding your candles, spells, oils, tarot cards, and sacred items.
• Dragon's Blood ink and parchment for writing your spells.
• A ritual knife or athame to cleanse, project energy, open and close a circle, cast spells, and cut magickal items in your ritual.
